Cheng Chon Yew’s Difficult Life Journey
Cheng Chon Yew has faced immense challenges since birth. He was born with hydrocephalus and paralysis in one arm. To manage his condition, a surgical procedure was performed to insert a shunt, long, soft tube with a valve that allowed cerebrospinal fluid to drain from his brain to his abdomen. It is truly unimaginable that an infant had to endure such suffering. Unfortunately, the shunt became blocked, necessitating two more surgeries to clear it.

Despite these hardships, Cheng was a diligent child, helping his parents at their food stall. However, his health took a turn for the worse three years ago after a fall at home, leading to gradual deterioration and ultimately, total paralysis.

Cheng has been bedridden and unable to care for himself. With his parents needing to work long hours, his father often had to interrupt his work to care for Cheng before returning to his job. Sometimes, Cheng would wake in the middle of the night, demanding his father’s presence. Weighing approximately fifty kilograms, Cheng requires significant effort from his elderly father to be moved from the chair to the bed or to the bathroom. Despite their immense love and reluctance, Cheng’s parents entrusted him to our Love Transmission Disability Care Center due to their inability to manage his needs.

Given his weight, two caregivers are needed to assist Cheng with bathing and changing his diapers. To prevent muscle atrophy, we ensure that he receives daily physical therapy and rehabilitation. His playful nature often leads him to wake the caregivers in the middle of the night, seeking their company.
